In our ever-present quest to increase productivity while decreasing shipping and delivery times, we have expanded our packaging methods to utilize the latest RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technologies. Today, a significant thrust in RFID usage can be found in enterprise supply chain management, improving the efficiency of inventory tracking and inventory management.
We have explored several possibilities and technologies, adopting those procedures which we felt would work best and be the most cost effective for not only our company, but for our customers as well. After deciding which RFID technologies and methods would best suit our needs, we began a rigorous in-house testing phase. We created numerous scenarios, attempting to thwart this project at every possible avenue. This allowed us to see firsthand the capabilities of RFID and also to experiment with the RFID technology in order to determine which methods would provide us with the most benefit and the highest level of optimization for our manufacturing facility.
After our thorough in-house testing phase, we decided to assess our RFID program externally, in a supplier-managed inventory setting, and in collaboration with one of our largest customers. Having found success within that environment, we are striving to implement this program within other divisions as well, expanding this opportunity to other customers. In today’s market, keeping costs to a minimum is a huge factor in determining the success of a project, and to us, keeping costs low will help our RFID program be successful, which in turn, will be beneficial to our customers.
Through our RFID program, our customers will save money, have more planning capabilities with regards to the activities on the manufacturing floor, and allows them to concentrate more on the manufacturing processes rather than worrying about incoming or outgoing materials and supplies. We believe this will become a very useful and practical manufacturing tool.
